GlobCom
Authentic learning for tomorrow’s communication professionals
Reflection from Jacinta Ebworth, 2014 participant (November 2018):

I look back on my GlobCom 2014 experience fondly. I feel as though it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to collaborate internationally with students from around the world on a group assignment for a real life client. It was hard work but we had a great team leader in Brooke Dawson. Working with students from around the world gave us a great insight into how other universities teach and what students are exposed to, it was a great way to create the perfect communications plan pulling on everyone’s knowledge, ideas and experience.
We had great support from our lecturer, Katharina Wolf and Curtin offers nominal scholarships to assist with the travel fees. Once we submitted our project were nominated as finalists and were invited to present at the GlobCom Conference 2014 hosted at Emerson College, Boston. We used our scholarship money to buy our plane tickets. We ended up taking out the prize for best Communications Plan for Zeiss Lenses. It was a great accomplishment, and then we got to go to New York City visiting a variety of prominent marketing and media institutions a tour setup by Gregory Payne, Emerson College. We got to visit Horizon Media, the United Nations, the United Arab Emirates Consulate, the Consulate General of Iceland and NY1 News. We took tours of the offices and met with staff from different levels of expertise. It was such an eye opening experience to see all the different avenues our degree could take us down.
This experience was one of a kind and I was able to make some great international connections and friends. I am still friends with our team leader Brooke to this day. Since completing my degree in 2014 I have taken on different contract in the Events, Marketing and Public Relations field and at the end of December this year I am taking the leap and moving to New York City to pursue new opportunities, build on my skill set and expand my knowledge.
