GlobCom
Authentic learning for tomorrow’s communication professionals
About GlobCom

The Global Communication Project (GlobCom) is an international initiative co-ordinated between 14 universities, across 15 countries, representing five continents. Every year, between 7-9 truly international, virtual teams with representatives from each participating university, are formed. Teams are provided with a communication brief from an international real life client and have to develop a creative and realistic solution, similar to a real life pitch situation. The Project’s aim is to create a platform for intercultural cooperation among students and lecturers in the field of communication.
What makes GlobCom unique:

1. The focus is less on competing against international peers/ other universities, but rather on participating as part of a truly international team, with members from 15+ countries

2. Central role of an international client, who provides live briefing sessions and extensive feedback as part of the final client pitches
-
(paid) industry placements offered to participating students (e.g. INEOS in Cologne in 2018)
-
adoption of student recommendations (or parts thereof) by real life client (e.g. Wellness World USA in 2019, WWF Malaysia in 2015, Zeiss in multiple years)

3. Opportunity to build a global network of peers and industry contacts, supported by the GlobCom alumni network (now at approx. 7000+)

The GlobCom Project was initiated in 2008 by the GlobCom Foundation, a Germany-based charitable organisation. Its aim has been to create a platform for intercultural cooperation among students and lecturers in the field of communications, or public relations. Over the past decade, more than 5000 students from around the world have participated in GlobCom.

Reasons behind the creation of the GlobCom Project:
-
Lack of Public Relations (PR) professionals with skills to run international/global accounts.
-
Increased demand for global companies and agencies for professionals with international/intercultural PR experiences.
-
Training of PR students as part of a multicultural teams in real life international situations

Curtin has been an integral part of GlobCom for nearly a decade. Find out more about GlobCom@Curtin on the corresponding page.
Some of the highlights of our involvement are captured in this website, including the 2015 symposium in Borneo, our unique way of embedding the real-life, cross-cultural experience in the curriculum and research outcomes.

As a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 GlobCom symposium shifted to a fully virtual format. The Curtin team performed a key role in the promotion and coordination of the symposion, including participation in an industry panel and a keynote discussing the post-COVID future for public relations.
